Battle lines are drawn

April 26, 2007

Well, the House and Senate have both passed the compromised version of the Iraq supplemental, which includes a timeline for withdrawal of troops from Iraq. President Bush has been on a campaign to marginalize the bill as nothing more than partisan politics for the past two weeks, and has promised a veto of any legislation that contains a timeline. So, the battle lines have been drawn. Who will blink?

Let’s hear where you stand. Call the White House, and tell President Bush that you support a timeline. Tell him that his veto will be against the will of the American people. Tell him that we no longer trust him to conduct this war.

I doubt he’ll listen, but its worth a shot. Someday, his conscience has to start working.

While calling the White House and emailing them is a good suggestion to making it known that there is an opposition this war…it’ll only get you so far. I’m pretty sure that the email address is required for them to have made public. They want the public to know that they are open to suggestions and comments.

The only thing the White House and members of Congress will respond to is bodies. Angry and willing people who will occupy senator’s offices, protest constantly, and organize to get more people to join a movement. The Democrats, no matter how much they say they represent the anti-Iraq sentiment, continue to fund the war. The only way to end the war is to stop funding it. If this timetable passes, great. The war will end…but at the cost of another 800 – 1000 more troops. Another thousand Iraqis? But the Democrats won’t stop funding the war. For their political future it seems like a bad move to them. They will quickly be labeled the party that doesn’t support the troops the same way the anti-war movement is labeled. In fact we support the troops by protesting the funding of the war and the hypocritical senators that say they are against the war and continue to fund it like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Herb Kohl.

Speaking of Herb Kohl, the Madison Wisconsin chapter of the Anti-war network, which RIT Anti-war is a part of, occupied Senator Kohl’s office on April 18th. They stayed overnight before being threatened with $424 fines for trespassing “private property”. It ain’t private if its funded by tax dollars!! Senator Kohl’s is one of these guys…one of the anti-Iraq war Senators that continue to fund the damn war. He’s also the richest Senator in the country. If he’s so against the war, why does he refuse to meet with the anti-war movement.

So while calling the White House and emailing them seems like a good idea, it’s disturbing their daily operation that will get their attention. The power lies in the people, not the government. If we stand up for ourselves and for the people of Iraq and the troops who are dying for nothing…then we can bring an end to this war and form a movement big enough to prevent future war conflicts from existing.

    Iraq for Iraqis…Troops Out Now!
